In Bombay wordt de populaire filantroop Frank Masters vermoord. Zijn vele vrienden zijn diep geschokt. Voor de grote Indiase speurder inspecteur Ghote betekent de moord moeizaam ploegen door een wereld van misdaad in een broeierige stad. En een strijd, niet alleen tegen de gangsters waartoe de vermoedelijke moordenaar behoort, maar ook tegen zijn gewetenloze chefs.

Extreme in its mediocrity

Frank Masters, American millionaire and founder of a Bombay home for vagrants, is dead. Murdered, it seems, by arsenic poisoning. Hounded by his superiors and hindered by a stream of lies, Inspector Ghote sets out on a crusade for a calculating killer. When he is confronted with the more than common corruption he starts to struggle with his own conscience.

Keating has written more than twenty Inspector Ghote mysteries and this is the first I ever read. The book is extreme in its mediocrity. It has not much entertainment value, because a reader who is acquainted with the genre already knows who did it after the first pages. The character of Inspector Ghote is developed without much enthusiasm and so after some chapters he only succeeds in irritating the reader by his presence.
