Inhoud
Bespreking
Great storyteller, but...
Many people told me that I shouldn't hesitate: read One Hundred Years of Solitude, you will love it! Well, maybe it is just because of these high expectations that I didn't manage to really fall in love with this book by Gabriel GarcÃÂÂÂa Márquez. Actually, I am much happier because I was able to finish it, then that I enjoyed it.
And it all started with such an uplifting opening sequence. The first one hundred pages really tickled my fancy. The fantastic undertone and the wonderful craftsmanship of storytelling, it let me escape to that beautiful place of dreams. At that point, noone would have been able to convince me that this book was not going to be my all time favourite.
But then the story started to dwindle. It did confuse me more than it kept me focussed. The time between reading sessions started to increase. I started reading in August and it took me a whole winter to finish it. And not being fully submerged in the plot made me completely loose track. This might be a pity. Because, if I would have kept my reading pace high, I might now be able to better understand the book.
Maybe I will give it another go... when I am retired, or so.
